Thiruvananthapuram, July 18, 2023 – Former Chief Minister of Kerala, Oommen Chandy, breathed his last today at the age of 79. The veteran Indian National Congress (INC) leader and prominent political figure had been undergoing treatment for health-related issues at a private hospital in the state capital.
Oommen Chandy, popularly known as “Chandy Sir,” had an illustrious political career spanning several decades. He served as the Chief Minister of Kerala for two terms, from 2004 to 2006 and from 2011 to 2016. Known for his affable nature and astute political acumen, Chandy played a significant role in shaping Kerala’s political landscape.
Born on October 31, 1943, in Kumarakom, Kerala, Oommen Chandy entered politics at a young age and quickly rose through the ranks of the Indian National Congress. He held various positions within the party, including serving as the President of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee.
During his tenure as Chief Minister, Chandy focused on implementing numerous developmental initiatives and welfare schemes aimed at improving the lives of the people of Kerala.
